Earth Week!

In honor of earth week, here is some information on your Democratic presidential candidates’ views on the environment:

Barack Obama:

  • Reduce Carbon Emissions 80 Percent by 2050
  • Invest in a Clean Energy Future
  • Support Next Generation Biofuels
  • Set America on Path to Oil Independence
  • Improve Energy Efficiency 50 Percent by 2030
  • Restore U.S. Leadership on Climate Change

Hillary Clinton:

  • A new cap-and-trade program that auctions 100 percent of permits alongside investments to move us on the path towards energy independence;
  • An aggressive comprehensive energy efficiency agenda to reduce electricity consumption 20 percent from projected levels by 2020 by changing the way utilities do business, catalyzing a green building industry, enacting strict appliance efficiency standards, and phasing out incandescent light bulbs;
  • A $50 billion Strategic Energy Fund, paid for in part by oil companies, to fund investments in alternative energy. The SEF will finance one-third of the $150 billon ten-year investment in a new energy future contained in this plan;
  • Doubling of federal investment in basic energy research, including funding for an ARPA-E, a new research agency modeled on the successful Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency
  • Aggressive action to transition our economy toward renewable energy sources, with renewables generating 25 percent of electricity by 2025 and with 60 billion gallons of home-grown biofuels available for cars and trucks by 2030;
  • 10 “Smart Grid City” partnerships to prove the advanced capabilities of smart grid and other advanced demand-reduction technologies, as well as new investment in plug-in hybrid vehicle technologies;
  • An increase in fuel efficiency standards to 55 miles per gallon by 2030, and $20 billion of “Green Vehicle Bonds” to help U.S. automakers retool their plants to meet the standards;
  • A plan to catalyze a thriving green building industry by investing in green collar jobs and helping to modernize and retrofit 20 million low-income homes to make them more energy efficient;
  • A new “Connie Mae” program to make it easier for low and middle-income Americans to buy green homes and invest in green home improvements;
  • A requirement that all publicly traded companies report financial risks due to climate change in annual reports filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission; and
  • Creation of a “National Energy Council” within the White House to ensure implementation of the plan across the Executive Branch.
  • A requirement that all federal buildings designed after January 20, 2009 will be zero emissions buildings.

Young Democrats at Virginia Tech Officer Roles (NOTE–VP has been split into two positions)

President

Executive Vice President
1. Administrative Assistant to the President
- Be prepared to take Presidential responsibilities in the event of his/her absence, i.e. conduct Officer/Club meetings, be the club spokesperson, write e-mails, plan agenda
- Assist in planning major venue events
- Provide support at Club meetings: share speaking responsibility, board writing, video set-up, meeting preparation and take-down
- Be there to set-up, be there to “close up shop”
2. Outreach and Public Relations Chair Supervisor
- Supervise Outreach and Public Relations Chairs
- Provide event planning guidance and logistical support
- Hold Chairs accountable to prescribed duties

Vice President of Political Outreach
1. Fall: Campaign Manager
- Be the primary contact for Campaign questions from club members and candidates
- Coordinate YDVT campaign involvement
- Organize and manage Campaign events and volunteer opportunities, i.e. phone-banking, Headquarters activity, canvassing, and Rally/candidate events
- Provide campaign updates at Club meetings
2. Spring: Activist Manager

Treasurer
1. YDVT Bank Account Manager
- Manage the YDVT Bank Account, including any administrative responsibilities (signing for Event Planning, etc.)

- Write a fundraising goal for each semester
2. Fundraising
-Plan all fundraisers for the organization
-Brainstorm new ideas for YDVT fundraising
-Manage fundraising events and annual Spring direct mailing
3. Receive and Write all Checks
- Keep a written record of all checks written and received
- Write and turn in checks in a timely manner (i.e. one week)
4. Report Monthly Balance to Executive Officers
- Report monthly balance to Executive Officers (Tres., Pres., VP, Secretary)
- Monitor balance amount

Secretary
1. Write Minutes for Officers meetings, e-mail them out
- Write down an outline of events and important points for all Officers Meetings

- Take attendance at all Officers and Club meetings
3. Sign-Up Sheet Manager
- Create/manage/distribute sign-up sheets for events, carpools, etc.

Public Relations Chair
1. Design banners/display cases

Outreach Chair
1. Makes reservations and manage booths
- Plan and organize sign-up sheets and themes for Squires booths

- Plan and organize sign-up sheets and themes for organizational fair, events (i.e. movies, Drillfield events, etc.)
3. Manage supplies
- Store and keep track of YDVT materials
- Collect bumper stickers, pins, pamphlets, yard signs, etc. from campaigns and events
4. Relay for Life Coordinator
- Coordinate teams, event activities, fundraisers, and equipment
- Assign duties for RFL to others
5. Issue Chair Supervisor
- Oversee and guide Issue Chairs (MCDC, Women’s Issues, Labor, etc.) through event planning process
6. Sister Organization Liaison
- Keep contact with sister organizations, inform Officers of coordinating efforts (cosponsored events, etc.)

Web and Graphic Master
1. Manage YDVT Website
2. Manage Facebook Group; send out FB messages

Women’s Chair
1. Organize/make contact for all Women’s Issues events
- Organize events pertaining to Women’s Issues (reproductive rights, gender discrimination, women in politics, etc.)

2. Take Back the Night Team Coordinator
- Register and organize YDVT Team, including sign making, etc.
3. Attend Womanspace meetings
- Be the liaison for Womanspace
- Report Womanspace events to YDVT
4. Be the contact for questions and suggestions concerning Women’s Issues
- Receive and respond to question concerning YDVT and Woman’s Issues

Environmental Chair
1. Organize/make contact for all Environmental Issues events
- Organize events pertaining to Environmental Issues (global climate change, sustainability, pollution, etc.)
- Contact persons related to these events (i.e. other organizations, professors, etc.)
2. Adopt-A-Park Coordinator
- Coordinate dates, carpools, and supplies for Adopt-A-Park volunteer opportunities
3. Big Event Coordinator
- Register and organize a YDVT Big Event Team
4. VT Recycling Coordinator
- Organize and attend YDVT recycling efforts
5. Environmental Coalition Liaison
- Attend Environmental Coalition meetings
- Report to YDVT on relevant EC events

Montgomery County Democratic Committee Chair
1. Organize/make contact for MCDC sponsored events
- Organize events pertaining to MCDC (Benefit Dinner, cosponsored election events, Election Day poll volunteering, etc.)
- Contact persons related to these events (i.e. other organizations, professors, etc.)
2. MCDC Liaison
- Attend MCDC meetings
- Report to YDVT on relevant MCDC events
3. Be the contact for questions and suggestions concerning MCDC Issues

Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Issues Chair
1. Organize/make contact for all LGBT Issue events
- Organize events pertaining to LGBT (gay marriage, LGBT discrimination, LGBT issues in politics, etc.)
- Contact persons related to these events (i.e. other organizations, professors, etc.)
2. LGBTA Liaison
- Attend LGBTA meetings
- Report to YDVT on relevant LGBT events
Be the contact for questions and suggestions concerning LGBT Issues

SGA Representative
1. Represent YDVT in the Student Government Association’s House
2. Attend SGA House meetings Tuesdays at 5:30pm
