OUR FUTURE?

A SGA-sponsored event to voice our opinions about VT’s Budget Cuts.
Student volunteers are needed at 11:00AM, prior to the NC State game kickoff to form the phrase: “OUR FUTURE?” (Many of you may remember: “CUT THIS” a year ago)

This Picture will be a symbolization of the student’s academic future; we want Virginia Legislators to understand the impact it has on the students.

A few facts to keep in mind about OUR FUTURE:
•Public higher education costs have increased, leading to an affordability challenge for ordinary Virginians.
•Reductions in state funding—which lead to tuition fee increases—usually occur during labor market downturns when Virginia’s students and their families can least afford it.
•A college education greatly increases an individual’s earning potential and the multiplier effect of that higher income benefits the state’s tax base and helps to create a healthy economy within the state.
•Virginia Tech is expected to receive at least $42.5 million less in state appropriations for FY 2009-10 than budgeted for in FY 2007-08

It’s getting to be that time of year again…..RELAY FOR LIFE!!!!!

What is Relay For Life?
Taking place on FRIDAY, APRIL 9, 2010, Relay for Life is a HUGE all night party on the drill field celebrating the end of a several month long effort to raise money to fight cancer.  It’s pretty much one of my favorite things at college. At this celebration there will be performances from all of the a capella groups, aerobics classes, free food, games, competitions and so much more!  Also, in addition to staying up all night, there is a track set up around the campsite, on which at least one member of our team should be walking at all times.  There are different themed laps throughout the night and luminaries to remember those who have lost their battle with cancer.  It’s basically good clean fun.

How do I get involved?
JOIN THE YDVT TEAM (and invite friends to join the team!!!!)
Click on “Sign up” then “Join a Team”
Search our team name “Young Democrats”
Click on it and enter your information.
MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR CREDIT CARD.
*It costs $10 to join, but this money goes toward helping fight cancer and toward covering the costs of such a major event.
**For $10 you could get 2 drinks at Rivermill OR a night full of FUN!!!!!! for a good cause!!!

In addition to joining the team, there will be several fundraisers between now and the Relay For Life event in April! I already have some plans but please let me know if you have any ideas.  OUR TEAM GOAL IS $1,000.

Why should I help out?
- Cancer affects everybody.
- The money goes to the American Cancer Society.
- It’s SO MUCH FUN.
- It’s a great way to give back and get involved in community service.

I’ll start with the bad news. As I am sure you have all heard by now, the Republican ticket was elected to statewide office yesterday.
Although Montgomery County regrettably voted red this year, I am pleased to point out that in the Blacksburg precincts (A-2, A-3, E-1, F-1, F-2, G-1, G-2) Creigh Deeds won in all but E-1 where he lost by a mere 79 votes. These numbers reflect our hard work here and we should be proud of that!
And Jim Shuler was reelected! However, I am sad to announce that our Peggy Frank was defeated for the House of Delegates.
The winners of the town council election are Susan Anderson, Krisha Chachra, Cecile Newcomb, and John Bush. I am very happy with these results– we have elected smart, qualified people who will serve Blacksburg well! It is also exciting to note that there are now four women on Blacksburg’s town council– a majority of the seven-seat board. This is the first time in history there were more women on our town council than men.
Some people are saying that this proves that Virginia is a red state. This is simply not true. We won one, they won one– it’s still a swing state which means we need to keep working hard to have our voices heard in Virginia’s government.
Our work here is in no way finished. This means we need to be even more active and support issues we care about in Virginia and make our opinions known to our leaders! We need to keep our leaders accountable to the citizens, especially since over 814,000 Virginians voted Democratic.
So, THANK YOU to everyone who put in countless hours contacting thousands of voters in the last couple of months. Yesterday alone, we attempted contact with over 3,000 residents in Blacksburg. Please do not think that your work was not noticed and appreciated.
Take a breath, get some rest, and start doing your homework again! I’ll see you all on Tuesday night at 9 pm in Brush Mountain A.
