President Kathleen Newbould

Kathleen is a senior Communication major with Political Science and German minors. An Alexandria native, she enjoys campaigning, traveling, reading, and baking. Her favorite thing about the Young Democrats at Virginia Tech is all of the awesome people she has met and lifelong friends she has made through the club. (Cheesy, I know.)

Vice President Sarah Wright

Sarah is a senior Interdisciplinary Studies major with concentrations in History, English, and African Studies. She was born and raised in England but currently resides in Reston, VA. Her interests include reading, history, hiking, and politics. An avid member since 2007, Sarah enjoys the opportunities YDVT presents such as meeting influential local, state, and national politicians.

Treasurer Emily Jaffa

Emily is a junior majoring in Mathematics with a minor in Political Science. She enjoys a variety of activities from traveling and sailing to cooking and hanging out with friends. Her favorite thing about YDVT is meeting new people and getting to hear interesting speakers. Last year, she got to hear both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama speak in person.

Secretary Gabi Seltzer

Gabi is a sophomore and secretary for YDVT this year. She is a Philosophy and History double major with minors in Political Science and American Studies. She is originally form Haslett, Michigan but now lives in Manassas, Virginia. She likes to read, swim, spend time with her friends, and watch Red Wings hockey. Her favorite thing about YDVT is all the amazing and fun people she has met and the opportunities to help make a difference.

Environmental Chair Marisa Maldonado

Marisa is a Senior and her major is Wildlife Science. She lives in Midlothian, Virginia (near Richmond). She likes to hang out with friends and family, read, hike, do anything outside, and a bunch of things! Marisa’s favorite thing about YDVT is making an impact with all the elections, especially the presidential election!

Labor Chair Johanna Fulghum

Johanna is a senior Economics major with Sociology and Environmental Economics minors. She grew up in Vienna, Virginia, and loves running, politics, and listening to NPR. She loves working for Young Democrats at Virginia Tech, meeting and supporting candidates, and enjoys community and political activism.

Women’s Issues Chair Nicole Faut

Nicole is a sophomore majoring in History and Political Science with a Medieval and Early Modern Studies minor. Despite having lived in different states and exciting cities, she calls the small town of McGaheysville (just outside Harrisonburg, VA) home. Her favorite activities include reading, painting, and meeting people. She loves how Young Democrats at Virginia Tech coordinates with other great clubs on campus, along with the wonderful people who call themselves YDs.

LGBTA Chair Katie Barnes

Katie is a sophomore Geography major at Virginia Tech. She is a native of Leesburg, VA and enjoys going to concerts, baking, drawing, and spending time with friends. Her favorite thing about the Young Democrats at Virginia Tech is having the chance to meet an amazing and diverse group of people all working towards a common goal.

Webmaster Riley Newell

Riley is a junior in Computer Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. As a native of nearby Roanoke, Tech has been a part of his life since the beginning. He enjoys anything with computers, drumming, and spending time with family and friends. His favorite thing about YDVT is putting his skills to work for something he believes in.

SGA Representative Josh Deutschmann

Josh is a sophomore majoring in Economics and Math, minoring in French, Music, and Computer Science. He is from Columbia, Maryland and enjoys music, cars, the occasional game of frisbee, and of course campaigning!

MCDC Representative Kyle Gardiner

Kyle is a sophomore majoring in Political Science and Philosophy with minors in African American Studies and Religious Studies. He enjoys anything related to politics, working towards a sustainable future, and pretty much any sport (but especially soccer and snowboarding). His favorite thing about the Young Democrats has been getting to know YDs throughout the state at the annual VAYD convention.

Graduate Chair Mat Sherman

Mat is a Graduate Student in the Education department. He recently obtained a Bachelors of Science in Mathematics from Tech. An Army brat, he was born in Fort Knox, Kentucky, but has lived all over the world, including such exotic locations as Kansas and Texas. In his spare time, he performs with various musical groups including Dub-Reggae legends Dubnium. His favorite thing about Young Democrats is the rousing political discussion at the Rivermill after meetings on Tuesdays.
